I really wouldn't have fancied being whoever wrote the script for Newsround's coverage of the HPV jab. They did a brilliantly judged job though. Their slant on the story may be judged from the fact that Small came running in saying "Mummy, will you let me have that injection when I'm 12 please?" "Yes darling, of course" (unless they've found a hyper brilliant cure for all forms of cancer before then).

I've not seen the Newsround script but the issue of widespread vaccination is not as simple as some suggest. Vaccination is not a no-risk option and although it reduces the chance of being affected by the specific agent that it immunises against the subtle effects on the immune system are not clear. I still occasionally get blistering around immunisation scars that is triggered by allergens not related to the original immunisation and there may be other effects that are rarer but more serious.
