Obsolescence
Jul. 4th, 2008 09:08 pmElderly Dyson has finally bitten the dust, so to speak, after 12 years, which is not bad for such a notoriously unreliable machine, but on the other hand it did have its motor replaced whilst still under warranty, and a new brush to replace a broken one, and its on/off switch went some years ago, along with its wheels, and there's quite a lot of gaffer tape holding various bits together. It's much like the hero at the end of a mid period Steven King novel - there's only one way it's going to end. Which is what made it so particularly stupid of me to spot a load of cut-price filters for it in Robert Dyas six months ago and think "Ooh, what a bargain! I'll stock up on three packets!" Of course the obvious thing to do would be to buy another Dyson in a compatible model - but that would involve me ever buying Dyson again, which is clearly out of the question. Which? have taken Dyson off their "Over our dead body" list on the grounds that they now come with five year warranties, but I want something that doesn't break in the first place, rather than something which will break and I'll have to faff around organising collection and mending and redelivery - even if the repair is free.
So I have a lovely new Miele, and lovely new carpets to go with it, and two packets of filters for a Dyson DC2 (the stairhugger) will be wending their way to Lambeth Freecycle (along with the accessories/hose for other people to mend their knackered old Dysons), unless any of you lot want them.
