He has just got back from having the car serviced, and was very impressed by the effect that a new set of spark plugs and a change of oil and brake fluid has had. It apparently feels much more eager, responsive and other good Jeremy Clarkson words.

Three hours later it has just occurred to him that the absence of two car seats and eighty something kilos of passengers (probably ninety by the the time you include the nappy bag, getting on for a hundred if we take the larger pushchair) may have had more of an effect.

Of course I could have pointed this out to him, but as a philosopher my mind is too highly trained.

Car engines are more responsive after servicing. The modern synthetic oils degrade fairly quickly into an acceptable but lower performing sludge so for the first few thousand miles you do get snappier performance.
Having said that I am not unbiassed as I am convinced the car runs more smoothly after it has been washed. Cars have personalities and like attention.
