For the benefit of those not watching BBC One's Ten O'Clock News, Jeremy Bowen has just described the Lebanese army (when compared to Hizbullah) as "wallflowers at the dance of death".

When this happened to Tom Lehrer, he gave up satire.

Conventional garlic bread accompanying an asymmetric war-pizza is how I see them.

Perhaps they're the "little" in "little local difficulty"?

I am surprised that more people have not commented on the Met being done under 'health and safety at work' legislation. I thought that was a fine example of Hislop writing the news (since one of Private Eye's new ongoing jokes is a police station log where they concentrate on things like going after Ann Robinson for saying that the welsh are a funny lot etc.).

I screamed incoherently at the radio when one of the high-ups from the Met said he was "very disappointed" that they were having to face the trauma of a Health & Safety prosecution.

There was a fine 'health and safety notice - after shooting someone in the head 7 times please wash your hands' cartoon in the Indy today.

has been around for along time, as in a photograph I spotted recently in Portsmouth archives: next to an enormous sign saying "Have you replaced your divots?", a 10-m bomb crater over a collapsed camouflet, with a man swinging a 9-iron at the bottom of it.

I don't think Bowen was trying to be funny, that's the problem - he was attempting to be deep and achieving only a Day Today parody.
