I didn't really agree with any of the statements, apart from Trchlo-what?
I'd say instead:
Aspartame tastes nicer than saccharin (and some pretty heavy studies have exonerated it from any obvious badness) but wouldn't it be better just to put half as much sugar in, like, pretty much everything? Pretty please?
The beef's an odd one. Last week I picked up some organic locally sourced which said on it: "organic -- better for you, better for the cow". Christ, I thought, is it? Or am I being cruel to the animal by depriving it of medecine? I'm over at the Soil Association website settling my anxiety* about this question right now.
* Hmmm. "Homeopathy and herbal remedies are used widely in organic livestock management."
Aspartame is an interesting one - it's been studied to death and I don't recall anyone finding anything (although there was something in New Scientist a few weeks ago - I forget what), but, as my highly scientific survey shows, there's a very widespread mistrust of it, probably based just on the fact that it's Artificial, with a big big A.
Triclosan on the other hand really does seem a bit dodgy - to my list of paranoias I could have added the fact that it's so close in formulation to PCBs that minute amounts of dioxin contaminants seem likely to emerge in the manufacturing process, and that it may (or may not - it was a big splash scare story in the Evening Standard, that most reputable of journals) produce chloroform when combined with the chlorine in UK tap water. But mainly I object to the entire concept of putting a bacteriocide in my toothpaste (or rather, not my toothpaste, as I check my labels ever since an idle glance at my tube of Colgate Total one morning gave me a nasty surprise).
About 10 years ago I remember a study implicated Aspartame in, of all things, temporary reduction in intelligence. My major objection though is it tastes funny. Sugar however is just evil. It causes massive moodswings, heart disease (studies show it is worse than saturated fat) and is very addictive.
