If you were organising a small-scale community facility and wanted a basic, cheap (pref free) ultra-low maintenance web presence THAT WAS ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WHO DON'T DO BLOODY FACEBOOK. What would you use? Wordpress has been suggested - any good?

I use Wordpress for my blog and am pretty happy with it - you can post blog updates but can also have 'pages' for static information.

I use Wordpress for a couple of things here and also have one client who uses it for a moderately high-traffic site -- it works well and is accessible to people who, like me, are of the "don't do Farcebook" persuasion.

As an example of what a WordPress site can do in a fannish context, see the Westercon 64 (http://www.westercon64.org/) web site. The main page is a blog — thus announcements go there — while all of the rest of the "static" information about the convention is on static pages. That particular site uses the "husna" WordPress theme, but there are lots of WP themes, any one of which might work better for you.

Google groups works for the Milton Keynes SF book group. We use Meetup for the Oxford board games group. It costs a little bit but seems to do the job.

Thanks, but I think we need something which is totally accessible to the casual browser, rather than something for an opted-in gang IYSWIM.

I do. At the board games group we still get most new members through Daily Info.
