On the way back from school Small informed me that they were talking about plays in school and she had decided that she was going to be a playwright when she grew up.

I made approving noises and, out of curiosity, asked if she could name any playwrights. I was hoping for Shakespeare, at best, and was thus somewhat taken aback when she said "err, Aeschylus?"

"Well done Small! Yes that is how you pronounce his name. Umm, do you know any plays by Aeschylus?"
"No"
"Well, how have you heard of him?"
"He was the one who was killed by a tortoise being dropped on his head!"

Horrible Histories' Stupid Deaths segment has a lot to answer for...

The girls today in society go for classical poetry
So to win their hearts one must quote with ease
Aeschylus and Euripides

Because he was killed by a tortoise being dropped on his head?

Wow, I even got the wording right. That's quite spooky.

(Admittedly, I am usually channeling my inner 7-year-old.)

Not clear to me why that would make her want to emulate his career path, though...
