Tedious request for help

Does anyone know anything about carpet cleaners. We are in dire need of a professional clean, but the trade is notorious for rip-offs and people who at best do a crap job, or at worst ruin your carpet - checking with the National Carpet Cleaners Association tells me that most of the people in the Yellow Pages who claim to be members are flat out lying, which doesn't help my confidence.
Any tips? I have got one recommendation from a work colleague, although they share their phone number with a Queen tribute band, which doesn't inspire confidence (it's amazing what Google will tell you - I'd never used it on a phone number before - though it's possible the band number is a typo).
