I have finally sent off my Hugo nomination form. It reads - in full -
Best Novel
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell
Susanna Clarke
Bloomsbury
I felt so inadequate whilst writing it out, but I'm pretty sure it was the right thing to do, because although I cannot pretend to be seriously au fait with The State of SF Today I do read a handful of new books each year and I adored JS&MN so much that it is inconceivable that there were five books published last year that I would rather have seen on the ballot if I had read them. However I couldn't confidently say the same about Going Postal, much though I enjoyed it, so I couldn't nominate it with a clear conscience.
But what about the Dramatic categories, spiritual home of the cultural lightweight? Brace yourselves childfree readers - I haven't seen _any_ of them - not Finding Nemo, not Spiderman 2, not Eternal Sunshine - none of them. For the first half of the year we could watch videos (all of which would be 2003 releases of course), but not go to the cinema, and since Tiny's arrival we haven't had time to watch an entire 2 hour DVD. I have been able to go to Watch With Baby with Tiny, but that only shows 2 films a week, heavily skewed to the perceived audience, hence I've seen Bridget Jones 2 and even Wimbledon (I was desperate) but the only remotely genre thing I've seen was Hero - it was beautiful but I wouldn't want to nominate it for a Hugo.
For Short Form I have seen all of season 5 of Angel except Not Fade Away on hooky download CDs (thank you to someone who I will call M* S**** for legal reasons) but it was such a long time ago that I simply can't remember how much I liked them (and you really wouldn't want to rewatch stuff in that format - except Once More With Feeling, which I used to put on as background music). As a terrestrial only viewer I haven't seen anything else - though I suppose I could have gone for Radio 4 HHG at a pinch, and would have gone for Nebulous if it wasn't 2005.
I don't really want my old life back, but bits of it were quite nice. However Tiny will be sleeping through the evenings eventually - we could join a DVD postal rental service and pretend to have a cultural dimension - of course by then we'll be about six sequels behind in a dozen superhero franchises, and Small will be demanding the entire Pixar oeuvre in her own right. If you meet me in the next ten years, don't tell me how Eternal Sunshine ends.
